Still not sure what book coaches do? Keep reading to learn more.

What the heck is a book coach?

We invest in education for a reason: to learn new skills from those with experience because we don’t know what we don’t know.

Crafting and publishing a book is no different.

From how to focus your chapters so each one serves the overall goal of your novel . . .

To truly understanding your genre and readers’ expectations . . .

A book/author coach keeps you focused on the most important next step for you and answers all your questions so you don’t get lost in doing the research yourself.

In short, we walk you through the entire publishing process so you can achieve your goal faster and with complete confidence.

What coaches + editors do

In addition to author/book coaches, different editors focus on specifics aspects of your book. The three primary types of editors include a developmental editor, who can help with manuscript evaluations; a line editor, sometimes called a copyeditor; and a proofreader, who checks for grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Frequently asked questions

What are your payment options?

Payments are processed using Zelle. If you don't have Zelle, then we can discuss other options, but note that services like Strip include processing fees.

We offer two payment options: (1) pay monthly or (2) pay in full after you sign our coaching agreement.

  1. Pay monthly. Once you sign our coaching agreement, you will pay the first month's fee to secure your spot in the program. Afterward, payments are due on the 25th of the month.
  2. Pay in full after you sign the coaching agreement.

How long does this coaching program last?

Currently, we offer two packages:

  1. The Definitive Manuscript: Six months for those who have a completed manuscript and are ready for any stage of the revision process.
  2. The Self-Publishing Launchpad: Four months for those with a finished, polished manuscript where we will focus on marketing research and walking you through the publishing process.

Clients can add on additional months as desired, but our mission is to help you reach your goal within six months.

Do you offer private or group coaching?

Yes. Our group coaching sessions take place weekly and include a few 1:1 coaching calls to ensure you're on target to reach your goal. If you miss a coaching session, you can access the replay for up to a month.

We also offer a limited number of private 1:1 coaching packages where you and the coach meet weekly or other other week, depending on your needs and capacity.

When do coaching sessions take place?

Contact us to learn more about our current offerings. However, we do record coaching sessions, so if you miss one, you can access the replay for up to a month.

What is the program creator's background?

Erin became an editor in 2004. For her first job, she edited a science magazine (even though she didn't know much about science). Afterward, she worked for 8 years as a nonfiction book editor. When she switched to freelancing, she edited memoir, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Currently, she focuses on fantasy, romance, and romantasy—her true passions.

She earned a BA in Literature from The American University and MA in Writing from The Johns Hopkins University. During both of those programs, Erin took advanced English grammar courses (yay for syntactic design and revision!), and she continues to challenge herself with online courses to refresh her editing and coaching skills.

What genres do you coach?

Erin: I have coached authors who write fiction, memoir, and creative nonfiction. My specialties are romantasy, fantasy, and romance.

Allyson: I primarily edit YA and adult fantasy, historical romance, and fairytale retellings. I've also edited children's and nonfiction books.

ABOUT ME

Erin P.T. Canning has worked for 20 years as an editor, encouraging each writer’s individual voice and strengthening their writing goals.

She always planned to write a book, but life had a tendency to distract her. After dedicating six years of her life to motherhood and discovering her ADHD, she started writing again, even though she feared her writing skills had atrophied.

After letting go of her perfectionism, Erin finally finished her own shitty first draft and released her fantasy romance novel, Ruins and Redemption, in 2023. Her current role as a podcaster and book coach enables her to help writers pursue their author dreams.
